typography vs. dann.

i was handed a challenge at work yesterday. i had to come up with a quick flyer for a local music (etc.) store, electric fetus.

i had to translate 3 paragraphs worth of copy into an 8.5x11 handout.

i will file this as my first well made typographical project.

i usually battle typography, but i was able to turn all the text into a design.

i'm not used to tooting my own horn and i apologize, i hope you enjoyed my toot.

to keep the tootin' common (tutankhamen... king tut.... i am hilarious) here's a sign i had made for them earlier this year:

high priest of additive light.

i have another threadless submission awaiting approval right now.

high priest of additive light. - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

if you're cheeky enough, you find the misspelling and mock me furiously over it.

and to explain the name, i will place my professor glasses precariously on the bridge of my nose and we shall begin:

additive light:
this portion of the title is referencing additive color. additive color is how the eye perceives color from computer monitors, television, etc. when all the colors are shown at their strongest, you get white. where the opposite, subtractive color, when all the colors are at their strongest you get black. this is how color is perceived in print media, or more easily remembered through sloshing all your finger paint colors together in preschool when you got that brown/black muddy color.

the rest is kind of obvious, the six arms like that of ganesha the hindu god blah blah blah.

new threadless print.

the title is misleading, as this is my first threadless print.

a design i had made back in december, was purchased by threadless.

the actual print is a little smaller, as i'm certain they had to scale it to fit girls extra small as well as 3xlarge, but i still think it looks dynamite.

if you're so inclined, you can buy the shirt here.

i was introduced to threadless and started submitting designs a mere month before i began schooling for graphic design, so there's a definite arc in the quality of my work (that i'm nowhere near the end of), and it's really vilifying that the designing playground that i got my start at finally liked one of my designs enough to nab it.

i promised myself i wouldn't cry.....

if you're tired of reading my attempts at wit here, threadless also conducted an e-mail interview with me where my charm continues to fool no one.

i have a thing for hats.

i have a new threadless submission, and i'm stoked because this is the first one i've submitted with a flash interface, check it out by clicking below

red beanie on a greyscale hunting cap on a top hat on a mesh ball cap on a cowboy hat - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

i know of a few dial-up voters who simply vote zero on anything that takes more than a second to load, but they tend to be the same type to score a zero regardless.

i have a thing for hats.

i think it stems from my head being too large for most of them that draws me to them.

i loves me some hats.

...and then he said, "chirp."

chirp.

a little while ago, I entered a little competition by submitting this design:

bird without a beak sitting atop a typewriter sayi - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

now that it's up for voting, tell me how much you love or loathe it. i suppose indifference wouldn't be out of order either.

the same image is also up for voting at yay art here. there are also more of my yay art designs here.

till your socks fall out.

my mom is a belly dancer, and for one of her friends upcoming parties, they're all dressing as different divas.

my mom has chosen to be the "ghetto diva" so i made some rap lyrics and some beats for her.

below is the surprising result...

my mom can rap.

to clarify, shimmy till your socks fall out is reference to a bra stuffing incident, poking some fun at the person the party is for.

and that's me doing the background supporting exclamations, i'm pretty street.

here's the file, if you're bold enough to have this in your head when not in this blog:

have bandwagon? will jump.

a while ago, i had participated in a fun little blogger fueled contest at threadless making sandwich mobiles.

now there's a new one, simply to create any design and give it a very obvious name.

so I've taken what was originally titled "chirp." and extended the name to:

bird without beak sitting atop a typewriter saying chirp.
bird without a beak sitting atop a typewriter saying \

contests are too much fun.

hooray yay art.

yay art is yet another online competition i've recently joined. this one in particular sells limited run art prints.

i've put together 2 pieces, one i was assembling for threadless, and the other was reassembled from an entry i had placed at design by hümans.

dann's yay art pieces

you can visit my yay art profile here, i'm sure i'll be updating that page often. as much as i adore t-shirt designing, it's nice to step out of that and do these prints and skate decks.

edit:

boo yay art.

i have 2 more designs in the same spot, but they are fairing really badly percentage wise.

the diva in me thinks it's the other artists all "naying" or voting that they don't like every design that is not theirs in hopes that it will help them win.

the reality may be that people don't like my designs, but it has dropped pretty drastically fast on both days 2 and 3.

yay art is also announcing the winners shortly after the last day of the competition, and the voting is ongoing. so while mine will be voted on for 2 weeks, with people stabbing it in the heart with nay votes, someone could enter theirs on the last day, get their 15 online friends to vote yay, and they have a considerably better chance of making it into the top 24 prints than i do sitting around for all the nay votes.

i hope the folks at yay art have a way to take this into consideration.
